Helen M. Garner, age 95, a longtime Leesville, Ohio resident, died early Thursday morning, August 26, 2010 in the Hanover House at Massillon.
During her working years, Helen was a nurses aide who worked for the former Evans Nursing Home and the former Boor's Nursing Home at Bowerston where she retired after 20 years of service.
She was born September 20, 1914 in Bellaire, Ohio and was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Helen Allen Scott. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cyril Garner, who died October 27, 1972, one son Robert Garner, and five brothers.
She was a member of the Leesville United Methodist Church since 1981, and was an active member of the United Methodist Women of the church. Helen loved to travel and discuss her adventures with her friends. She served as secretary for former Leesville PTA and was a former member of Sherrodsville Pythian Sisters, and was active with the Harrison County Democratic Party. She was once an active member of the Conotton Valley Senior Citizens. Years ago, Helen enjoyed making homemade rugs and was an extraordinary cook. Her family indicated that she was seldom seen without wearing her apron.
She is survived by her two daughters and a son, Mrs. Donald (Evelyn) Housel of Dundee, O., Mrs. Carl (Jean) Ickes and Russell (Joan) Garner, both of Canton, O; her eight grandchildren, Allen (Diane) Housel of Columbus, O., Robert L. Garner of Canton, Brett Garner of Charlotte, North Carolina, Brian (Karma) Ickes of Canton, Mrs. Roger (Michelle) Squire of Louisville, O, Angie Piper of Canton, Steven Garner of Phoenix, Arizona, and Mrs. Larry (Karla) Young of Canton, her sister Emma Mae Deetz of Massillon, and 12 great-grandchildren.
A public graveside service will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Sunday, August 29, 2010 in the Leesville Cemetery at Leesville, O. with Rev. Peggy Garner officiating. There are no calling hours, however a private family visitation will be observed. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Leesville Cemetery Association, P.O.
