Carol Garvin Obituary

Carol A. (Lipps) Garvin, age 80, of Sherrodsville, Ohio, died peacefully in her home the morning of September 13, 2020. She was born November 26, 1939, in Bergoo, WV, and was the daughter of the late Olen and Lula (Shaver) Lipps.
Carol was a 1957 graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur High School. She began working at Riedboard Brothers garment factory before establishing herself as a dressmaker in her own cottage industry.
She married Oral E. Garvin March 26, 1976, and moved to Ohio. As her husband approached retirement, Carol began to pursue her life-long interest in genealogy. She researched both her parents’ families as well as her husband’s family. She compiled and published 5 complete-to-date books, which are now out of print but can be found in several libraries and historical societies.
She loved birding and includes over 600 different birds on her life list. Her other hobbies included vegetable gardening, love of flowers, needlework, the outdoors, and photography. Her favorite hobby was travel and she and her husband visited all 50 states. She treasured visiting places she learned about in grade-school classes. When in 3rd grade, she was introduced to the Grand Teton Mountains and Grand Coulee Dam and she said to herself, “I want to see that!” And she accomplished that goal on her way to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles in Bend, Oregon in 2008!
2019 saw the completion of her book Symbols of the 50 States of the United States of America which includes a photo of and facts about each state bird, flower, and tree.
Carol was a faithful 54-year member of her church. She most recently attended the Cambridge, OH, congregation of United Church of God, A.I.A along with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Carol was a woman of strong faith and faced life’s challenges with courage, grace, and dignity.
Carol was preceded in death in 2018 by her husband Oral E. Garvin.
She is survived by her son Sid (Kellie) Loudin of Barnesville, OH, her daughter Sherry (Scott) Thouvenin of Canton, OH; grandchildren Brandon (Jessica) Loudin & Amanda (Patrick) Hession of Barnesville, OH, Natalie & Abigail Thouvenin of Canton, OH; great-grandchildren Peyton, Paizlie, & Paxtyn Loudin, and Olen, Colin, & Aidan Hession; a step-son Timothy Garvin of Kentucky, his children and grandchildren; she is also survived by two brothers Rondel Lipps of Virginia, Ralph (Opal) Lipps of West Virginia, and her beloved sister Donna (Dick) Ervin of West Virginia.
She will be sadly missed by her family and friends more than words can say.
