Ronald Jack Simler, age 75, of New Philadelphia, Ohio, died suddenly Wednesday, September 12, 2018 in his residence.
He was born January 14, 1943 in Massillon, Ohio and was the son of the late Robert J. and Kathryn May Ziegler Simler. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Joseph Simler and a step-son John Sickels.
He retired after 16 years as a delivery/setup man for Ferrellgas at Strasburg, and also held the same position with C & J Propane and Tappan Gas Co. He worked as a coal miner for 18 years at the Y & O Coal Company. He was a Vietnam War Era veteran of the United States Marine Corps and exhibited extreme patriotism in his daily life. A man of tenacious personality, he was very active, walking four or five miles each day in spite of the use of a cane. He was passionate about fishing, and most looked forward to his fishing excursions with his grandsons and having the"whole tribe" (his grandkids) gather for Christmas. He enjoyed collecting and shooting his firearms and was a card-carrying member of the NRA. Ron was exceptionally supportive of his companion Jo's many activities, including her woodworking and craft projects.
He is survived by his loving companion of 40 years, Jo Ann Sickels of the residence, a step-daughter Connie Sickels, his three sisters Mrs. Faye (John) Morrow of Snellville, GA, Jean K. (Companion Jim Hollyfield) Simler of Sherrodsville, OH, and Mrs. Kathy (Vernon) Cummings of Carrollton, OH, five grandchildren Robert Sickels, Katie Sickels, Kyle Sickels, Kevin Sickels, and Kallie Sickels and one great grandson Blake Sickels.
