Elizabeth Ann Bockus

October 8, 1928 ~ September 5, 2017 (age 88) 88 Years Old


Elizabeth Ann Bockus , age 88, a longtime resident of East Sparta, and recently Sherrodsville, Ohio, died Tuesday morning, September 5, 2017 in Park Village Southside  facility at New Philadelphia.
She was born October 8, 1928 in Canton, Ohio, and was the daughter of the late George C. and Bernice Maag Barrick.  She moved with her family to Magnolia in 1937 and to East Sparta in 1939. She graduated from the former East Sparta High School in 1946 and has lived in the area all her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Walter “Red” Bockus, who died October 16, 1990.  Elizabeth worked at her father’s drug store in East Sparta, the East Sparta Post Office, and was  the assistant cook in the Sandy Valley High School cafeteria for many years.  At age 70, she was employed at Fisher Foods on Fulton Road in Canton until she retired when she was 80 years old. Elizabeth was active in Sunday School, Bible School and sang in the church choir at East Sparta United Methodist Church, where she was a longtime member. She also was active in PTA when her children were in grade school, as well as Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. She spent countless hours supporting and attending her children’s activities, such as concerts, piano recitals, baseball games and track meets. 
Elizabeth was active in the East Sparta Business and Civic Association for many years.  She, along with her sister Marguerite Medley, were honored as East Sparta Citizens of the Year during the village’s homecoming in 2009.
She is survived by two daughters and two sons Mrs. Linda (Doug) Muir of Magnolia, O,  Mrs. Karen (Kevin) Love of Sherrodsville,  Randy (Sue) Bockus of Tallmadge, O., and Jeff (Michelle) Bockus of Bowling Green, Virginia.,  her loving sister Marguerite Medley of East Sparta, six grandchildren Scott (Tina) Muir,  Mrs. Megan (Jeff) Eckstein,  Brandon (Amanda) Muir, Matthew Hein, Barrick Bockus, Blake Bockus and four great-grandchildren Addison and Jordyn Muir and Lydia and Parker Eckstein.
True to her unselfish nature, she donated her body to Case Western Reserve School of Medicine. There will be no calling hours, as she wished.  
A Memorial Service Gathering will take place at 4:00 P.M. Saturday, September 9, 2017 in the East Sparta United Methodist Church with Pastor Peggy Garner officiating.  The doors will open at 3:00 P.M.
