David R. Felgenhauer, age 98,  formerly of Sherrodsville, Ohio, died late Tuesday night, January 3, 2017 in New Dawn Retirement Community at Dover following a lengthy illness.

He was born August 17, 1918 in Somerdale, Ohio and was the son of the late William G. and Anna Laura Biddycoffer Felgenhauer.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers Tom, Dennis, Ferris, and Virgil Felgenhauer, and three sisters Nema Keener, Rhoda Mae Seifer, and Gloria Leeper.

He retired in 1979 as a central maintenance employee of the Belden Brick Company at Sugarcreek. He was also a former manufacturing employee of  the Republic Steel Co. at Canton, the former U.S. Ceramic Tile Company at East Sparta and the former Clay Craft at Sugarcreek. Following retirement, he worked for five years as a road maintenance man for the Warren Township Trustees and managed to travel with his wife and spend a month in Europe.  David was a member of the New Cumberland United Methodist Church and a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army who served in the European Theatre. He was a life member of the former Bowerston American Legion and enjoyed playing euchre.  One of his main passions was fox hunting.  He and his wife Mildred welcomed any opportunity to go square dancing and together they were fixtures for many years at the food court in the New Towne Mall. 

He is survived by his wife Mildred Virginia Poe Felgenhauer, whom he married February 18, 1943,  a son  David R. (Diana) Felgenhauer of New Philadelphia, O., and a daughter Mrs. Virginia (Otis) Walker of Sherrodsville, a sister  Mrs. Connie (Gene) Angus of New Philadelphia, five grandchildren  Mrs. April (Richard) Anderson of New Philadelphia,  Jason T. (Susie) Walker of Hardy, Virginia, David R. Walker of New Philadelphia, Mrs. Bonita (Kenny) Smith of Dennison, O., and Erica Fields of Canton, O., and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Monday, January 9, 2017 in the Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville with Rev. Ted Knapp officiating.  Interment will follow in the New Cumberland Cemetery where the New Philadelphia V.F.W. Post #1445 will provide Military Honors.  A luncheon will be served in the New Cumberland United Methodist Church following the committal service.
