Shirley A. Slutz

Shirley A. Slutz, age 78, of 9189 Derry Road S.W., Bowerston, Ohio,  died Thursday evening, May 12, 2016 in Aultman Hospital at Canton following a brief illness.

She was born November 16, 1937 in Canton, Ohio, and was the daughter of  the late Charles R. and Leila Faye Johnson Shackle.  Her husband, the late Paul Harveston Slutz, whom she married November 10, 1956, died May 14, 2008. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, William Shackle.

Although she was primarily a homemaker, she was a former nurse's aide who had worked at the Sunny Slope Nursing Home in Bowerston. 

Shirley was a talented and skilled artist who specialized in portrait and scenery paintings. She was an enthusiastic member of the local Red Hat Society and delighted in the gathering of the ladies of that group. She loved to travel and was appreciative of all her opportunities to see her family participate in many 4-H activities at the county fairs over the years. She adored the company of children and savored any opportunity to plan and participate in cookouts and gatherings with her large family.  She was loving mother and grandmother who will be sadly missed by her family and many friends. 

She is survived by her ten children Paul (Dona) Slutz of Bowerston, Mrs. Steve (Brenda) Gartrell of Dennison, O., Mrs. Tim (Connie) Jeandervin of Dover, O.,  Tim (Carla) Slutz of Bowerston,   Mrs. Brian (Karen) Swonger of Strasburg, O., Mrs. Wayne (Jackie) Harcourt of Cincinnati, O., Sam (Chris) Slutz of Cadiz, O.,  Mrs. Bill (Mary Kaye) Hinton of Salineville, O., Mrs. Mike (Christine) Pfouts of Navarre, O., and Troy  Slutz of Bowerston,  30 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Charles "Chuck" (Kay) Shackle of Galion, O., and Ronald (Kathy) Shackle of Richville, O., and two sisters, Nina Strohl of Thornville, O., and Mrs. Dave (Linda) Riffle of Canton, and a sister-in-law, Linda Shackle of Canton.

Funeral services will be conducted  at 12:00 Noon, Tuesday, May 17, 2016 in the Leesville United Methodist Church with  Rev. Jerralyn Myers officiating.  Interment will follow in the Leesville Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Monday from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. in the Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville.  The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association,  Ohio Valley Affiliate, P.O.
