Robert L. "Jack" Sanders, Jr., age 85, of 129 Hazelton Street, Sherrodsville, Ohio, died Saturday morning, June 11, 2016 in Aultman Hospital at Canton, Ohio after becoming suddenly ill  in his home.

He was born January 22, 1931 in Arjay, Kentucky and was the son of the late Robert L. Sr. and Hester Smallwood Sanders.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by  six brothers, two sisters, and a granddaughter. 

Jack retired from Diebold, Inc. at Canton in 1996 after 45 years of service.  He honorably served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion Post #660 at Sherrodsville.  Always community minded, he once served as the Mayor of the Village of Sherrodsville and also spent 12 years as a member of village council, helped establish the community park, and had also performed duties as a police officer in the village. In later years, he worked part-time for the village as a maintenance man. Jack coached baseball and helped with the local Boy Scout Troop when his sons were participating in those activities. He was a charter member of Sherrodsville Community Fire and Rescue where he served as the Chief Engineer and for many years, was a member of Sherrodsville Volunteer Fire Department Inc.  Jack, along with the late Jack Strawn, were responsible for initiating the first emergency ambulance service in the village. He was a skilled mechanic who spent many hours repairing his automobiles and gardening equipment, and had fully restored a 1929 Model A Ford.  He enjoyed swap meets, antique show,s and auctions. A resident of Sherrodsville for over 60 years, Jack will be sadly missed by his family and many friends. 

He is survived by  his wife, Alta M. Baker Sanders, whom he married June 24, 1954, five sons Gary D. (Michelle) Sanders of Leavittsville, O., Gerald (Brenda) Sanders of Sherrodsville, Bryan "Doug" (Cathy) Sanders of Dover, O., Carl (Marla) Sanders of Dellroy, O., and Terry Sanders of Sherrodsville, 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, a brother, Arthur "Ott" (Judy) Sanders of Arjay, Kentucky, six sisters Geneva "Jenny" Beeler of Harrogate, Tennessee, Mrs. Robert (Lois) Cloutier of Fountain Town, Indiana, Mrs. Michael (Fern) Larrymore of Rueben Gap, Georgia, Patsy Leggett of Connersville, Indiana, Mrs. Charles (Doris) Miller of Zion, Illinois,  and Brenda Ogan of Tazwell, Tennessee.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, June 15, 2016 in the Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville with Rev. Larry Stitt officiating. Interment will follow in the Sherrodsville Memorial Gardens where the Carroll County combined units of the V.F.W., D.A.V. and American Legion will conduct military graveside services. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 P.M. in the funeral home. A luncheon will be held in the Sherrodsville Lions Club following the committal service.  The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Sherrodsville Community Fire and Rescue, c/o  P.O.
