I was lucky enough to be Rick's neighbor on Garden Ln. off Alta Blacktop. We became friends and running partners that first summer he moved in. I have so many great memories with Rick, Ronny, and Karen.
To the entire Santee family,
I'm so sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to each of you.

Jeanne and family,
Words can not express my sorrow for your loss. I smile when I think of Rick. I remember him as a young teenage boy who was so handsome and self assured.
Time marches on but memories last a lifetime. Bless you all! May the memories you have help you get through this sad time. Hold him close to your hearts.
Love and peace to you all

August, 1978 - He was the new kid in town, the “city” kid from Memphis I had been hearing about. I had been that new kid too, two years earlier. It was the first day of football practice, and we were both sophomores. He stood there cocky and confident in his own white shoes. We all had the school issued black ones. His talents and skill on the field soon spoke for him. He was moved to varsity. He was good. Very good.
The two of us could not have been more different, and we could not have been more the same. It was our love for competition and our never quit attitudes. It was our love for laughter, girls, beer, pranks, and unwavering support of each other that made us inseparable. He always had my back. Never altered. Never a mean word to me unless to tell me that I was out of line. And I treated him the same. Off the field, we had complete different interests. But he was always there to support and mock me. Always. And I did the same for him.
He lived at my house, I lived at his. Coming home to find him at the dinner table with my mom, grandma, or brother would not be odd. Coming home to find his dad, Russ, working on my truck wouldn’t be odd either. It was all understood. It was all reciprocal.
The stories are many, but here is just one. He loved swimming at a particular strip mine lake in the summer time. The water was questionable, and the snakes were common. We never swam far from shore. We would back my pickup to the water’s edge and use the tailgate as a diving board. One time, he bet me that he could swim further than me underwater. When I finally surfaced far from shore, I thought I had won. Then I turned my head to hear him laughing as he stood on the shore and pointing at the snakes swimming around me. He got me good.
The summer before he left for college, I backed over his prize possession restored Mustang with my grandma’s tank of a Cadillac. The car actually drove on to the hood of his Mustang. He didn’t laugh, but he didn’t get too angry either. It was time to get to work fixing it. You see, he had done something similar to my mom’s new Grand Prix two years earlier. He didn’t need to be reminded of this, nor did I. It was all understood.
Over the past decades, we haven’t been able to see each other often. Our lives have taken us different places, as life does. But I know in his passing, between he and I, it is understood. He was a wonderful man at a level that few ever get the privilege to encounter in life.
Enjoy heaven, my friend. You will make it a better place.
